3-Methoxyoxan-4-one (MOX) is a potent compound that has been shown to have cardiovascular activity. It is orally active, with a pharmacokinetic profile that suggests it may be able to cross the blood brain barrier. MOX has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties in vivo and in vitro models of inflammation. Functional assays and asymmetric synthesis methods have been developed for the discovery of MOX analogues with improved pharmacological properties.
MOX inhibits the production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin 1 beta (IL1β) in LPS stimulated human monocytes, as well as the production of IL6 by human synovial cells. It also inhibits nitric oxide production by activated macrophages, thereby decreasing the production of reactive oxygen species.
