2-(Methylsulfonyl)pyridine (MSOP) is a chromatographic reagent that is used in the detection of serum concentrations of 2-Pyridinethiol (2-PS). MSOP is also used as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent in laboratory experiments. It has been shown to be toxic and should not be administered to humans. In addition, MSOP has been shown to have a negative effect on fertility by decreasing the fertility index in rats. MSOP binds covalently to glutathione molecules, which are essential for maintaining the antioxidant capacity of cells. The active form of MSOP is pyrithione, which is an organophosphate with antifertility effects that can cause reproductive toxicity.
