1-(4-Methoxyphenyl)imidazole is an organometallic compound that acts as a ligand in cross-coupling reactions. It can be used to produce 1,2-dihydropyridines by reacting with acetonitrile and chlorine gas. This compound has been shown to be able to react with both halides and amines, but not aldehydes. The reaction of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)imidazole with iodide ions is the most common route for synthesis of this compound. The reaction proceeds via the formation of a transient intermediate, which then reacts with iodide ions to form an imidazole ring.
1-(4-Methoxyphenyl)imidazole also has absorption properties at 350 nm that make it useful for determining its concentration in a solution.
