2-Methoxythiophene is a molecule that belongs to the class of aromatic heterocycles. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of other molecules, such as carbonyl compounds, which are important for cancer diagnosis. 2-Methoxythiophene has been used to produce acetylated derivatives and then analyzed by solid phase microextraction followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The chloride ion can be detected by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. 2-Methoxythiophene can also be used to detect cancer cells in urine samples because it reacts with nucleophilic groups on the cancer cells and cleaves bonds between chloride ions and nucleophilic groups on the cell surface. This reaction produces hydrogen chloride, which is detectable by gas chromatography.
