3-Methylpicolinamide is a chemical compound that is used as an efficient, inexpensive and environmentally friendly nitrating agent. It has been shown to be effective in the synthesis of various arylamines from nitrites and amines. 3-Methylpicolinamide is also used as a catalyst for nitration reactions. This compound can be synthesized by reacting sodium nitrite with picoline or methylpyridine in the presence of alkali catalysts. The resulting product can then undergo radical nitration to produce 3-methylpicolinamide.
