Methyltrioctylammoniumiodide is an ionic liquid that is used as a reagent in the analysis of organic compounds. It has been shown to be a sensitive optical sensor for water vapor and chloride. Methyltrioctylammoniumiodide can be used to transfer chlorine from water solutions to hydrogen fluoride, producing hydrochloric acid. The ionic nature of methyltrioctylammoniumiodide makes it acidic and able to extract metals such as copper and lead ions from solutions. This compound has also been investigated as a model system for wastewater treatment and plasma mass spectrometry.
