It has a molecular weight of 178.2 g/mol and a melting point of 181 °C. 2-Methyl-5-nitrophenylguanidine can be synthesized by reacting 3-acetylpyridine with hydrochloric acid and nitric acid in an organic solvent, such as chloroform or ether, at a temperature range of 25°C to 100°C. This compound has been found to be one of the impurities in the synthesis of imatinib, which can be removed through recrystallization or fractional distillation.
