4-Methylnicotinamide is a compound that has been shown to be able to alleviate the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. It is an inhibitor of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, which is an enzyme involved in the metabolism of glucose. 4-Methylnicotinamide acts by inhibiting the activity of this enzyme and thus preventing the production of NAD+, which is essential for cellular energy production. This inhibition may be due to its ability to act as a methyltransferase or dehydrogenase. The inhibitory effect on this enzyme leads to decreased levels of NAD+ and increased levels of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, leading to an accumulation of 4-methoxybenzaldehyde, which can accept amines.
