5-Methoxybenzofuran is a fluorescent probe that can be used to identify resistant mutants in bacteria. It is often used as a substrate for the enzyme 5-methoxyindole-2-carboxylic acid methyltransferase (5MIAT), which converts 5-methoxyindole to 5-methoxybenzofulvene, the product of the reaction. The rate of conversion can be measured by the fluorescence intensity. 5-Methoxybenzofuran has been shown to be active against a number of bacterial strains, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and erythromycin resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae.
