Product Information
- 5-Methylindanone
- 5-Methyl-2,3-Dihydroinden-1-One
- 5-methyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one
5-Methyl-1-indanone is an experimental benzylic compound. It can be synthesized by the reductive coupling of methoxymethylene with tetralin under metal catalysis. The reaction is a dilemma as it has been shown that the steric interactions between the methyl group and the methylene group lead to a preference for formation of 5-methyl-1-indanone. However, if one were to substitute an electron withdrawing group on the benzene ring, such as a methoxy or nitro group, then 5-methoxy-1-indanone would be formed in greater quantities.
