8-Methoxy-2-tetralone is an organic compound with the formula C8H10O2. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents. This compound is prepared by reaction of 2,4-dimethoxytetralin with sodium bromide and potassium iodide in water at 0°C. The 8-methoxy group on this molecule can be reduced to a hydroxy group or oxidized to a methoxyl group. 8-Methoxy-2-tetralone can be used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds, such as arenes and peroxides. The demethylation product of 8-methoxy-2-tetralone, 2,4,6,-trimethoxytetrahydropyran, is also an intermediate for various syntheses.
