5-Methyl-2-tetralone is a carbonyl compound that can be synthesized from diazoketones, such as 2-acetylpyridine. It has been used in the synthesis of heterocyclic ring systems containing the carbonyl group and in the preparation of thiones. 5-Methyl-2-tetralone has been shown to react with trifluoroacetic acid and chloride to give ethylidene chloride and methyl chloride, respectively. The addition of alkyl groups to 5-methyl-2-tetralone leads to substitution effects on the molecule, which can be seen through the changes in its physical properties.
