3-Methyl-2-oxobutyric acid calcium salt is a treatment effect that is used to remove color and odors from water in industrial and commercial processes. 3-Methyl-2-oxobutyric acid calcium salt removes color and odor by forming a precipitate with magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, or calcium chloride. It also reacts with sulfates and chlorides to form insoluble salts. 3-Methyl-2-oxobutyric acid calcium salt can be used for decolorization of paper pulp in the production of paper. This compound has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals.
