3-Methylindan-1-one is an organic compound that can be used as a preservative and antimicrobial agent. It has a low toxicity to humans, and has been shown to have antifungal activity in animals. 3-Methylindan-1-one is also used as a feed additive for chickens and pigs, which helps to improve egg production, meat quality, and growth rates. The antimicrobial properties of 3-methylindan-1-one are due to the alkylation of chloride ions on the surface of bacteria or fungi by the sulfoxide group in this molecule. This process interferes with the transfer mechanism between cells, inhibiting cell division. 3-Methylindan-1-one is also an odorant receptor agonist that activates olfactory receptors in host plants to initiate a response against herbivores such as aphids, who emit similar odors.
