5-Methyl-2-hexenoic acid is an organic solvent that is used in the production of paints, plastics, and synthetic rubber. It is also an alkyl ester that is used as a solvent in ionic liquids. 5-Methyl-2-hexenoic acid has two stereoisomers, cis and trans. The cis form can be made from the reaction of malonic acid and aldehydes. The trans form can be synthesised by genetically engineering bacteria to produce this compound or by recycling the cis form. This organic solvent is soluble in water and yields alkali metal ions when dissolved in water.
