Methyl2-amino-3-mercaptopropanoate,HCl is a mucolytic drug that is used to treat chronic bronchitis and asthma. This drug works by breaking down the mucus in the lungs and airways, which allows for easier expectoration. It also reduces the viscosity of mucus, making it easier to cough up. Methyl2-amino-3-mercaptopropanoate,HCl may be prescribed for patients with chronic asthma who have an increased number of inflammatory cells in their sputum. The mechanism of action has been determined to be through a transfer of electrons from cytochrome P450 reductase to molecular oxygen, which results in reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. These ROS cause oxidative stress in the cell membrane and lead to cell death by scavenging the cell membrane lipid bilayer and damaging proteins within the cell.
