2-Methyl-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid is a byproduct of the manufacture of thioesters. It is also a byproduct of the photolysis of thiazole-5-carboxylate esters and thioamides. The chemical can be synthesized by the reaction of trifluoroacetic acid with sulfur or x-ray irradiation. 2-Methyl-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid reacts with acetonitrile to form an x-ray crystal structure in which it is bound to a thioamide. Fluoroacetic acid can be used as a solvent for this compound.
