Methyl 5-hydroxy-1-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate (M5HPC) is a potent inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases. It is used in the screening of new drugs for the treatment of arthritic conditions. M5HPC has been shown to inhibit the production of collagenase and other enzymes that are responsible for the degradation of cartilage, which may be due to its interaction with erythrocyte membrane proteins. M5HPC binds to the active site of these enzymes, thereby inhibiting their catalytic activity. Methyl 5-hydroxy-1-methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate has also been shown to inhibit two different isoforms of matrix metalloproteinases, such as MMP2 and MMP9, and may have an effect on other targets as well.
