4-Methoxybenzene-1,2-diamine dihydrochloride is a protonated glyoxal with bacteriostatic activity. It is an inhibitor of tyrosinase, which catalyzes the conversion of 4-hydroxyphenylalanine to dopa and dopamine. This compound also inhibits monophenolase activity, which converts monophenols such as resorcinol to hydroquinones and phenols. 4-Methoxybenzene-1,2-diamine dihydrochloride has been shown to be an effective antibacterial agent against gram positive bacteria in vitro. In addition, it has an amine group that can form hydrogen bonds with amino acids on the surface of proteins in human serum.
