3-Methyldihydrofuran-2(3H)-one is a chemical compound that has been shown to have antibacterial activity. It is a metabolite of the drug butanol, which is used in the treatment of bacterial infections. 3-Methyldihydrofuran-2(3H)-one binds to the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. It has been found to be effective against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus as well as other bacteria. 3-Methyldihydrofuran-2(3H)-one also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
