4-Methyl-4'-nitro-1,1'-biphenyl is an industrial chemical that has been used in the synthesis of other compounds. It is a fluorescent compound with a wavelength of 515 nm. 4-Methyl-4'-nitro-1,1'-biphenyl can be synthesized from malonic acid and phosphorus oxychloride in the presence of aluminum chloride. The product is then heated to produce 4-methyl-4'-nitro-1,1'-biphenyl and oxychloride in a suzuki coupling reaction. The final product is luminescent due to its fluoroquinolone group.
