Methyl 4-hydroxypicolinate is a low potency antipsychotic agent that has been used in the treatment of schizophrenia. It acts as an antagonist at the 5-HT2A receptor, which is a subtype of serotonin receptors. Methyl 4-hydroxypicolinate binds to this receptor and blocks its activation by serotonin. This prevents the function of the receptor to regulate neurotransmitter release, leading to decreased dopamine levels in the synaptic cleft. The drug also has effects on other neurotransmitter systems such as norepinephrine and acetylcholine. Methyl 4-hydroxypicolinate also inhibits xanthurenic acid formation, which is an oxidative metabolite produced by tryptophanase from L-tryptophan.
