Methyl 3-methoxy-2-methylbenzoate is an intermediate in the synthesis of phenanthrene. It is prepared by the Wittig reaction of methyl 3-chloromethylbenzoate and magnesium chloride in the presence of tetrahydrofuran as an organic solvent. The reaction solution was neutralized with aqueous hydrochloric acid and then heated to remove the tetrahydrofuran. Methyl 3-methoxy-2-methylbenzoate can be converted to methyl ester by acetylation with acetic anhydride or chloroacetic acid. It can also be demethylated by heating with zinc, followed by dehydration with phosphorus pentoxide and sulfuric acid, yielding methyl benzoate.
