4-Methylstyrene is a nonpolar solvent that is used for the treatment of wastewater. It reacts with hydroxyl groups in the wastewater to form methyl ethers and can be then removed by distillation. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to investigate the reaction mechanism, which involves transfer reactions and structural analysis. 4-Methylstyrene reacts with anions or cations, such as chloride ions or palladium complexes, to form polymeric matrices that are stabilized by TBC (tetra-n-butylammonium). These matrices are stable at high temperatures and pressures, making this compound useful for the removal of organic contaminants from wastewater.
