1-Methyl-2-propylbenzene (1MPB) is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is a byproduct of the n-hexane extraction process. It is used in the synthesis of cyclic hydrocarbons and is found in emissions from automobile exhaust. The oxidation of 1MPB produces reactive oxygen species, which may lead to DNA damage. 1MPB has been shown to be carcinogenic, causing cancer in laboratory animals. 1MPB also increases serum levels of urea nitrogen and cyclic hydrocarbons and can inhibit NADPH cytochrome P450 reductase activity.
