Methoxamine is a drug that belongs to the group of 5-HT2 receptor antagonists. It is used in the treatment of mesenteric vasoconstriction and other conditions, such as in vitro methods for measuring the intracellular calcium levels. Methoxamine has been shown to reduce the contractions of papillary muscle cells by inhibiting cyclase activity. This drug also blocks 5-HT receptors and may be used to treat heart disease. Methoxamine is structurally similar to methoxsalen, a photochemotherapeutic agent used in cancer therapy. Methoxamine binds to DNA polymerase, but not RNA polymerase, and inhibits DNA synthesis.
