Menthyl lactate is a nonpolar solvent that can be used as a cavity. It is derived from menthol and lactic acid. Menthyl lactate has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the growth of human pathogens, such as Streptococcus mutans, by disrupting their cell membranes. This compound also has an anti-inflammatory effect due to its inhibition of histamine levels in the mouth. Menthyl lactate is stable in chemical conditions because it reacts with phosphotungstic acid to form a tautomeric structure and does not react with water or alcohols. Menthyl lactate can be taken orally as a monosodium salt or as the free acid (lactate).
