Methylene bis-(chlorosulfate) is a zwitterion that is used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals. It undergoes sulfation in liquid phase, catalysed by trimethylsulfonium chloride. This reaction yields methylene bis-(chlorosulfate). Methylene bis-(chlorosulfate) is a nucleophilic compound and undergoes nucleophilic attack on trimethyl bromide to produce methylene bis-(bromide). The chloride ion present in the reaction acts as a catalyst. The yield of this reaction is high, with 90% of the original reactants being converted into products.
