3-Methyl-2-cyclohexenone is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of other compounds. It is a colorless liquid that can be purified by vacuum distillation or column chromatography. In the presence of copper and l-tartaric acid, 3-methyl-2-cyclohexenone forms a copper complex with a blue color. This reaction also occurs in urine samples when there are high levels of copper and l-tartaric acid. The complex can be detected using x-ray crystallography to determine its conformational properties. 3-Methyl-2-cyclohexenone has been used as a catalyst for some reactions in organic chemistry, such as the conversion of cyclopentanones to cyclopentyl ketones.
