Methyl lysinate is an amide and ester of the amino acid l-lysine that has antimicrobial activity. It is used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease. Methyl lysinate reacts with the hydroxyl group of proteins, forming ester linkages. This reaction releases a methyl group into the solution. The methyl group is detoxified by an enzyme called soybean trypsin inhibitor. Kinetic data for this reaction are not available, but it can be assumed that methyl lysinate hydrolyzes at a slower rate than other peptides.
