Butenafine is a topical antifungal agent which inhibits the growth of fungi that cause superficial skin infections. It is effective against tinea cruris and tinea pedis. Butenafine has been shown to be more effective than terbinafine hydrochloride in clinical trials with a higher rate of symptom relief. The mechanism of action for butenafine is not completely understood, but it may inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol, which is an important component for fungal cell membranes. Butenafine also inhibits the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), which leads to skin inflammation and itching.
