Mecetronium ethylsulfate is a disinfectant that is used for the treatment of bacterial infections. It is an antibacterial agent that has been shown to be effective against a wide range of bacteria, including vancomycin-resistant enterococci and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Mecetronium ethylsulfate has been studied in both in vitro and in vivo models, with experiments demonstrating its effectiveness against infectious diseases such as septicemia and pneumonia. Mecetronium ethylsulfate can be used as an antiseptic for biological samples or as an experimental model for the study of antimicrobial agents. The optimum concentration is 0.5% (w/v) when using this compound in aqueous solutions.
Mecetronium ethylsulfate binds to bacterial cells by interfering with the production of ATP, which leads to cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division
