Magnesium oxide is an inorganic compound that is used as a coagulant in wastewater treatment. It has been shown to be effective at removing suspended solids and organic compounds from water. The magnesium oxide particles are activated by the addition of chloride, sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate, boron nitride, zirconium oxide or other chemicals. This activation increases the surface area of the particles and facilitates adsorption of various chemical species. Magnesium oxide has also been shown to have a protective effect on enzymes such as urease and amylase. This protection may be due to its ability to inhibit the hydrolysis of urea into ammonia and carbamate and the degradation of starch by alpha-amylase. In addition, magnesium oxide has been found to promote microbial growth through its ability to increase levels of growth factors such as insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1).
