4-Methylphenylhydrazine (MPH) is an adsorptive agent that is used in the treatment of vaginal candidiasis. It binds to the fungal cell wall and forms a complex with a proton, which causes the pH inside the cell to decrease. This leads to lysis of the cell membrane and death of the yeast. MPH has been shown to have antimicrobial activities against C. glabrata and other fungi, as well as other bacteria. The mechanism of action for this drug is not fully understood, but it may involve p-450 enzymes or Friedel-Crafts reactions. It can be toxic if ingested in large doses, so it should not be taken orally or by inhalation.
