4-Methylaminophenol is a chemical compound that is used in analytical chemistry as an indicator dye. It has an optimum concentration of 0.5% and a linear calibration curve with a minimum detection limit of 10-4 M. A 4-Methylaminophenol solution reacts with dinucleotide phosphate to produce red or pink color, depending on the pH. The reaction mechanism is believed to be due to the oxidation of dinucleotide phosphate by 4-methylaminophenol, which produces hydrogen peroxide and formaldehyde. This process leads to the formation of a Schiff base, which reacts with potassium dichromate to produce black precipitate of 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. 4-Methylaminophenol can also be used as an antimicrobial peptide by binding to calcium pantothenate at physiological pH and forming an ion pair. Antimicrobial activity against group P2 bacteria such as Staphylococcus
