Methyl 4-(benzyloxy)-5-methoxy-2-nitrobenzoate (MBMN) is a benzyl derivative that was identified as a potent cytotoxic agent. MBMN has shown affinity for cancer cells and binds to the DNA of cancer cells. It can be used to treat various cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and sarcoma. The crystal structure of MBMN has been determined and it has been found that this compound could bind to the DNA of cancer cells through an imine group. The molecule diffracts X-rays in unsymmetrical patterns because it has two different groups on opposite sides of the molecule. This compound constitutes one of three classes of compounds with which the drug company AstraZeneca is working to develop antitumor drugs.
