2-Methyl-1,3-benzoxazol-6-amine (CBMZ) is an inhibitor of the ABCG2 efflux pump. It inhibits the ATP binding cassette subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) multidrug transporter and prevents the pumping of various drugs out of cells. CBMZ has been shown to be effective in protecting against neurotoxicity caused by carbamazepine. The effectiveness of CBMZ was demonstrated in simulations with an effective dose of 10 μmole/L. This drug has also been shown to inhibit gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes in bacterial cells, leading to DNA damage and cell death. CBMZ also inhibits biphenyl oxidation, which may lead to its potential use as a neuroprotective agent in Parkinson's disease patients.
