Metanephrine hydrochloride is a non-natural amino acid, which is used as a substrate to measure the enzyme dopamine β-hydroxylase. It is an amide of metanephrine and hydrochloric acid and has a fatty acid chain. The uptake of metanephrine hydrochloride by cells can be measured by its conversion to dopamine. Metanephrine hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit the activity of dopamine β-hydroxylase in vitro, which may result in increased levels of dopamine in vivo. Metanephrine hydrochloride should be prepared for use on-line or in the presence of oxygen, as it will react with atmospheric oxygen to form an unstable amine oxide that decomposes quickly.
