3-Methyl-1-pentene is a monomer that is used in the industrial process of polyolefin production. The hydroxyl group and phenyl groups on this molecule are susceptible to nucleophilic attack, which leads to the formation of a new carbon-carbon bond. 3-Methyl-1-pentene is an additive for polyolefins and copolymers, where it improves their physical properties such as rigidity and hardness. This compound can also be copolymerized with other monomers to form polymers with different properties. 3-Methyl-1-pentene reacts with peroxide or chlorine atom in the presence of a solid catalyst to produce polymer products.
3-Methyl-1-pentene is also used as a reaction product in metallocene processes, where it undergoes addition reactions with olefins to produce polyolefin products.
