MPEG-DSPE Sodium salt is a lipid that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vivo. It binds to all-trans retinoic acid, which is a metabolite of vitamin A, and induces the protein synthesis necessary for cell division. MPEG-DSPE Sodium salt has also been shown to enhance the uptake of cancer drugs by liposomal formulations. The mechanism of action for this drug is not fully understood, but it may be due to its ability to induce autophagy (a process where cells degrade their own components). In addition, MPEG-DSPE Sodium salt has been shown to be toxic for animal studies with high doses.
