4-Methanesulfinylbutanenitrile (MSB) is a natural antibacterial compound from the plant Mesenteroides. It has been shown to have inhibitory effects on the growth of coli K-12, and to cause changes in the mitochondrial membrane potential. MSB also has antioxidant properties that protect against anion radical scavenging and scavenge nitric oxide radicals. MSB can be extracted from the plant Mesenteroides using organic solvents or by boiling water extraction, which yields a yield of about 1% of dry weight. The extract contains a number of compounds with biological properties, including ascorbigen, glucosinolates, nitrogen levels, and supercritical CO2 extractable antimicrobial activity.
