Product Information

Name:
Methyl 2,3-dimethoxybenzoate
Synonyms:
  • o-Veratric acid, methyl ester
  • Methyl o-veratrate
  • NSC 146462
  • Benzoic acid, 2,3-dimethoxy-, methyl ester
Description:

Methyl 2,3-dimethoxybenzoate (MMB) is a diacid with oxidase inhibitory properties. It binds to the active site of the enzyme, thereby inhibiting its activity. This drug has been shown to be effective against pimaricin-resistant bacteria and may be used as an additive in treatments for oil spills. MMB also has anti-inflammatory effects, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. MMB also inhibits fatty acid synthase and acts as an antioxidant by scavenging free radicals such as peroxide radicals. The fluorescence of MMB is sensitive to pH changes, which can be used to determine the pH of samples that are analyzed using electron spin resonance spectroscopy or high performance liquid chromatography.
