2-Methylpyridine hydrochloride (2MP) is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and methanol. It has been shown to have anticancer properties, inhibiting the growth of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. 2MP also inhibits the replication of herpes simplex virus, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of DNA and RNA. 2MP also has antibacterial and antiviral properties, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and viruses by binding to their surface receptors. This compound can bind to cationic surfactants such as benzalkonium chloride and chloride ions in water. This property makes it useful for removing oil from surfaces or cleaning products, such as household cleaners or personal care products. The reaction products formed with benzalkonium chloride are chloroformate esters and phenols. These compounds are toxic to aquatic organisms and should be handled with caution.
