Description

Formamide is a colorless liquid with the chemical formula CH2O. It has a strong, pungent odor and is highly soluble in water. Formamide can be prepared by treating an equimolar mixture of ammonium chloride and formic acid with phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) at elevated temperatures. The reaction produces hydrogen chloride gas as a by-product, which must be removed to prevent corrosion of the equipment. Quantifying the purity of formamide is difficult because it reacts with many compounds, including water, alcohols, amines, and phosphorous pentoxide.
