It is an enantioselective hydrogenation catalyst, which can be used in the synthesis of optically active esters. 4-Methoxy-3-methyl-4-oxobutanoic acid has been shown to be a ligand for copper complexes and is often used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other ester compounds. The succinic acid formed by the condensation of 4-methoxy-3-methylbutanoic acid with glycol can also be hydrogenated to form 3,4,5,6 tetrahydrobenzo[b]furan.
