Mofegiline hydrochloride is an irreversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A) that is used for the treatment of bowel disease, cancer, or neurological diseases. It inhibits MAO-A by covalently binding to it and prevents the degradation of dopamine, which increases its levels in the central nervous system. Mofegiline hydrochloride has been shown to be effective in treating inflammatory bowel disease by inhibiting an enzyme called leukotriene C4 synthase. This drug also has a high rate of elimination from the human liver and can cause drug interactions with other drugs that are metabolized through this organ. Mofegiline hydrochloride can also have adverse effects on the gastrointestinal tract, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
