2-Mercapto-1-methylimidazole is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of thioheterocycles. It is used as an anti-thyroid drug to inhibit the production of thyroid hormones, which are essential for proper metabolism. Methimazole has been shown to be effective in the treatment of a number of autoimmune diseases and metabolic disorders, such as bowel disease and locomotor activity. Methimazole inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential and alters mitochondrial function, leading to the observed effects on locomotor activity. This agent also binds to toll-like receptors (TLRs) and fluorescence probes, which may be responsible for its immunosuppressive effects. 2-Mercapto-1-methylimidazole can be injected as a solution or taken orally in tablet form.
