Product Information
- methyl (2E)-pent-2-enoate
- methyl (2Z)-pent-2-enoate
Methyl trans-2-pentenoate is an antiarrhythmic agent that is used to treat irregular heartbeats. It is a fatty acid that contains a carbonyl group and a structural analysis of the molecule has shown it to be an isomeric mixture of two compounds, cis- and trans-2,4-pentadienoic acids. The methyl group can be demethylated by reductive acetylation or hydrogenolysis to form the ethyl ester. Methyl trans-2-pentenoate is also used as a component in biodiesel fuels, where long chains are terminated with methyl groups. These methyl groups can react with nucleophiles such as water or hydroxide ions to form ethyl esters.
