L-Malic acid, disodium salt is a molecule that is a component of the citric acid cycle. It is an intermediate in the conversion of phosphoenolpyruvate to pyruvate and can be converted to NADH by phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. L-Malic acid, disodium salt has been shown to be chemotactic for various microbial strains such as E. coli and Salmonella typhimurium and has been used to study chemotaxis. L-Malic acid, disodium salt also plays an important role in blood urea nitrogen metabolism by being converted into malate which can then be converted back into L-malic acid, thus maintaining blood urea nitrogen levels. This process is especially important for organisms that have limited access to oxygen such as those found in soil or the human gut.
