4-Methoxy-1,3-phenylenediamine sulfate hydrate (4MPD) is a toxicant that has been found in wastewater. The toxicity of 4MPD depends on the concentration and duration of exposure. It is metabolized by electron transfer to form formaldehyde. Ammonium and perchlorate are hypothesized to be the sources of 4MPD in wastewater. In experiments, detoxification was seen when abiotic conditions were created or microorganisms were introduced.
